MODERN BATHING
We work 9 to 5 jobs, zoom around in cars, trains, and airplanes, and zap our food piping hot in less than a minute. Modern society, like it or hate it, is here to stay, and it can be both a blessing and a curse.
With modern living came modern design, and that my friends, is a blessing. I love the clean, simple lines of modern design, the minimalist aspect, and the functionality of it. And because modern man is stressed out, working too hard and not getting enough sleep, today’s bathrooms are being transformed into sanctuaries – into places where we can escape our stressful, hectic lives. I think a modern bathroom design is perfect for creating this type of sanctuary.
So if you’re about to update your bathroom and give it a much needed makeover because its décor is still trapped somewhere in the 1980s, this installment of Kiki’s Bathroom Design 101 is going to give you some helpful bathroom remodeling ideas to help get your bathroom’s design up to date, and right here in the year 2010.
Some people shy away from modern design for fear it may look too simple, harsh or cold. On the contrary, when well planned, it promotes a sense of serenity and simplicity. Tackling a modern bathroom design means completely eliminating clutter, which is probably the most appealing part of the modern look. (I really do dislike clutter!) A modern interior design has clean lines, focusing on function and avoiding excess. Therefore, a fair amount of storage space in order to tuck everything away once you’re done with it is the right way to go.
Let’s start with the bathtub. We can really modernize the bathroom by taking the bathing aspect to a whole new level. Here’s what I mean. Update the tub with an innovative bathing concept that uses sound vibration to calm your mind and soothe your body. This holistic bathing approach has panels built into the bathtub that broadcast sound waves through the water to your body. Now that’s a modern way to get away from it all! Another innovative, modern bathtub solution is the acrylic bathtub liner. A dull, outdated bath area can be transformed into one that’s ultra shiny and new in very little time simply by placing an acrylic tub liner over the existing tub.
Next, let’s update the toilet. I love this square-shaped high efficiency toilet…it defines the modern look and would instantly help to modernize any outdated bathroom. Plus, its “green” technology means saving hundreds of gallons of water annually.
Time for the faucets – choose something sleek, simple and quintessentially modern, like this bathroom faucet by hansgrohe.
If updating the sink and vanity, consider this wall-mounted Italian sink design by ArtCeram. It looks so incredibly modern, and creates so much extra space that it gives the bathroom an airy, light feeling only modern bathroom design seems to accomplish. Now for the color palette…combine vibrant colors with muted ones, like grey and orange, or white and red. For a modern, final touch, install a flat-screen wall mounted TV in front of the bathtub, so while you’re holistically enjoying a soothing sound-vibration bath, you’re also enjoying your favorite show.

Now that we’re fully immersed in the year 2010, we might just have to go somewhere in the future for my next bathroom design blog and explore the final frontier of bathroom design: the futuristic bathroom.
